Below are 5 well known additions for you to try out as recommended by Aveda hairdressers. Add to your regular Aveda shampoo, or use as a stand alone treatment.

HONEY

Honey has been used since ancient times as a conditioning treatment for hair. It’s a natural emollient which softens and soothes skin, but also keeps hair shiny by sealing in moisture. It also has anti-oxidant properties that actually strengthen the hair follicles and preventing breakage. Because it’s antibacterial, honey is a natural antiseptic which soothes dandruff and other scalp complaints, keeping hair follicles super clean.

Mix 2 tsp raw honey to 2 Tbsp of your chosen Aveda shampoo and use as normal, rinsing thoroughly afterwards.

LEMON JUICE

Most people have heard of lemon juice to help blonde hair stay blonde, but lemon is a wonderful addition to your hair care routine because of it’s anti-microbial properties, which help to clear infections like dandruff. Rich in vitamin C and citric acid, lemon juice will exfoliate and cleanse the scalp, removing build up and debris, leaving your hair feeling squeaky clean.

Mix 2 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice into 2 Tbsp of your chosen Aveda shampoo, massage and rinse as normal.

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

We all know that lavender can be superb at promoting healthy sleep and relaxation. But what about for hair? Did you know that lavender contains antimicrobial properties, helping to fight against bacteria and infection, which means it’s great for stopping inflammation of the skin. When applied to the scalp, lavender can promote hair growth, simply by keeping the scalp healthy.

Dilute Aveda lavender essential oil with a carrier oil such as Aveda shampure or beautifying composition oil. Mix the essential oil and carrier oil in equal parts. Rub gently all over your scalp being careful not to get any in your eyes. Wrap your hair in a towel for 10 minutes whilst you fully relax. Experience lavenders calming aroma and well as the scalp healing effects.

AVOCADO OIL

You can use the whole avocado mashed as a hair masque, or try avocado oil in your hair. Rich in antioxidants, minerals and essential fatty acids, as well as vitamin A, B5 and E, avocado oil is great for you inside and out. It’s one of the few oils that are able to penetrate deep into the hair shaft and moisturise your hair, so you can expect deep shine after using avocado oil!

Use a coin sized amount of avocado oil between your palms and gently massage and rub into your hair, all the way to the ends. Leave for several minutes before gently washing until the oil is gone.

ALOE VERA

Aloe vera is a soothing and versatile plant that gives hair a real treat, but is particularly good for the scalp thanks to its benefits to the skin. Dandruff and dry scalp are said to greatly improve, along with adding shine and moisture to hair.

Simply add 1 tsp of aloe vera gel to 2 Tblsp of your favourite Aveda shampoo and use as normal, rinse and style
