Skin is everything and now that summer is drawing to a close, it’s important to make sure you’re adapting your skincare routine to suit. Everyone knows that the secret to ageless beauty is bright, clear and radiant skin, regardless of whether you’ve got make up on. Typically, the autumn sees our skin become much drier and dehydrated thanks to artificial heating, harsh winds and colder temperatures. Rather than rely upon unwanted chemicals that so many skin products contain that are absorbed into our skin, Aveda skin care bases its formulas on the power of nature.
In this blog, we’ll take you through some top tips straight from our spa therapists for the autumn and winter seasons, with our best Aveda product recommendations to get you through the season.
First things first; skincare for colder months doesn’t have to be complicated than any other time of the year, rather a focal point on repairing any damage done by the summer sun whilst protecting your skin against the new challenges arising from the cooler seasons.
Different Moisturisers for Different Seasons
During the summer, skin can be easily damaged by harmful UV rays and sunburn. It can also dehydrate thanks to the higher temperatures which cause us to lose fluids through perspiring. With dehydration, fine lines and wrinkles become more visible, so it’s always recommended that you drink plenty of fluids and for sun damage, a high SPF is always recommended.
In the autumn, skin is damaged in a different way. There is less humidity in the air, which leads to skin drying out more quickly. In turn, skin can even crack and flake and again fine lines and wrinkles are emphasised.
Where in the summer a lighter moisturiser is recommended, so to enable the skin to breathe and sweat, as well as balance with the skins natural oils, cooler months require a richer, more protective moisturiser to create a barrier as well as provide hydration and nourishment.
Autumn / winter moisturisers should aim to protect, be rich in vitamin C and antioxidants and include hyaluronic acid to plump and nourish skin, as well as protect it. Hyaluronic acid helps skin retain most hydration, with the ability to hold 1000 times its own weight in water.
The Botanical Kinetics Intense Hydrating Rich Crème is the perfect moisturiser for winter months. Containing cupuacu butter and Salicornia herbacea, this velvety textured cream helps skin absorb and seal in moisture for hours.
Hyaluronic acid will help to repair and rejuvenate any summer damage, whilst offering maximum hydration.
Wear Sunscreen – ALL Year!
You should ALWAYS use an SPF – whether it’s winter or not, because those UV rays are not having a break through winter. You can always use a slightly lower SPF than in the summer if you prefer.
We recommend light weight Avedas Daily Light Guard Defence Fluid worn under your moisturiser, which has an ample SPF 30 and has UVA and UVB barriers for full protection.
Botanical Kinetics Serums
Aveda have launched three new serums, each containing bespoke plant based ingredients for different skincare needs.
The Botanical Kinetics Instant Luminizer serum contains snow lotus and alpha hydroxyl acid serum for gentle exfoliation and glow. The Botanical Kinetics Pore Refiner serum, is all about smoothing away the appearance of large pores.
However, for the colder autumnal months, we’re especially interested in the Botanical Kinetics Intense Hydrator for its hydration qualities.
Containing cactus fruit with hyaluronic acid serum, your skin will remain dewy and supple. Restore optimum moisture for the autumn, whilst minimising any fine lines. Silicone free, 98% naturally derived and vegan, this serum is for all skin types.
Night Time Skin Care
Whilst you sleep, your skin is busy at work repairing all the damage done during the day. It’s imperative that skin is cleaned thoroughly of any pollution, makeup or debris on the surface every night.
Since autumn and winter have less humidity, it’s important to use your night cream as an opportunity to hydrate your skin as much as possible.
The Tulasāra Firming Sleeping Masque does exactly that. This powerful combination of peptide and vitamin C, helps boost the skins natural production of collagen, which gives instant lift and firmness to skin.
Meanwhile, turmeric and liquorice root help to visibly brighten dullness, and cupuacu seed butter and organic shea butter deeply moisturise.
Within weeks, see glowing, refreshed, sculpted skin with diminished fine lines
Vegan and 97% naturally derived.
Skincare specialists and dermatologists recommend that you exfoliate at least once a week to rid the 50 million dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface layers of the skin. It also helps skin to regenerate.
Benefits of exfoliation include reducing clogged pores, brightening dull skin and reducing fine lines. Skin is more absorbent so serums and moisturisers work even better!
See here for more detail on how often you should be exfoliating your skin
Exfoliating can be done by using products containing a natural scrub, such as salt or sugar, but can also be done using brushing techniques with a facial brush such as the Tulasāra ™ Radiant Facial Dry Brush with its super soft contoured bristles to fit the angles of the face as part of the morning ritual kit.
Skin is left smoother, softer and glowing as the super soft bristles and gentle rounded peaks are specifically designed to fit the contours of the face, sweeping away dead cells.
Circulation is stimulated and skin is prepped to absorb all the goodness of serums or oils as needed.
It’s recommended that you use the facial brush as part of a daily ritual alongside Aveda’s Tulasāra™ Oleation Oil to boost skins vibrancy
Tulasāra™ Oleation Oil
Tulasara Oleation oil contains a blend of 6 plant based oils known for their nourishing properties
The Oleation oil is 100% naturally derived from six plant oils; Certified organic sesame, sunflower, jojoba seed, rosehip, apricot kernel and sweet almond.
The massaging restores natural radiance with circulation boosts whilst the oils penetrate and nourish deeper layers. The oleation oils are dermatologist tested and non acnegenic, suitable for all skin types.
Below is an example of how you’d use the dry skin brush and oleation oil prior to your usual moisturiser, eye cream and SPF application.
Use a Weekly Hydrating Face Mask
Regularly using a face mask is just an addition treat for your skin, and autumn is a brilliant time to make sure you’re taking extra care to hydrate your skin with a mask.
The Aveda Botanical Kinetics Intense Hydrating Masque is an oil-free formula designed specifically to hydrate the skin and cool it after being exposed to harsh environmental factors. The magic ingredients in this face mask include rosewater for freshening and toning the skin with sodium hyaluronate, which is a sugar-dervied humectant to deliver a surge of essential hydration.
