If you have curly hair, then we bet you’ve had others comment about how much they wish they had curly hair like yours. If only they knew! Curly hair is notoriously unmanageable and prone to being frizzy and dry. Curly hair can also be impossible to style and make ‘tidy’. But unruly curls don’t have to make your life a misery. If you’ve never has the experience of a curly hair hairdresser, you are missing out! Completely different methods are needed to tame curls and your curly hairdresser can offer a whole system of hair care for curly hair that every curly head should experience!
Why is Curly Hair Curly?
According to livescience, there are two theories on why people have curly hair. The first is that there are more cells on the outside edge of a hair follicle and less on the inside edge, which pulls the follicle inward creating the curl.
The second reason is that cell lengths are different on the inside and outside edges of the hair follicle and that’s what makes the hair grow non-straight.
The truth is, that if you look under a magnifying glass, you can see that straight haired people have completely round follicles and curly haired people have oval shaped follicles. The curlier the hair, the more flat the oval shape is.
Another theory on curly hair is that it’s better insulation, which means curly girls and guys will be rocking their winter warmth!
Curly Hair Specialist
Curly hair should be cut whilst dry. New guests often arrive at the salon with all their usual curly hair ideas for long hair, only to be surprised to find that we don’t know what they’re used to. Cut first and wash last!
Lianne also uses a cutting technique that isn’t the norm either. Curly hair generally means a lot more hair both in length and volume. Because of that, curly hair is cut upside down, which give the right perspective on how it will hang when upright and stop the dreaded triangle head.
Although unconventional, this is the best way to get the right shape. Curly hair ideas for short hair must also take into account the additional volume, so needs to be layered in a completely different way to straight hair.
After washing and conditioning, curly hair should never be dried in the same way as for straight hair either.
If you want your curls to drop beautifully and not end up as a fuzz ball, then turning the head upside down and squeezing gently is the proven method.
It’s okay to leave traces of good quality conditioner in there and not rinse the life out your curls. A little conditioner will help hair stay nourished and hydrated as well as lightly coated to prevent frizz.
Air drying curly locks is perfect, but if you’re time poor and need to dry your hair a bit faster, then use a microfiber towel or even a cotton t-shirt for maximum absorption and minimal disruption to the shape of each curl. Rubbing and towel drying hair is never a good idea because it encourages knots and frizz (a key problem with curls).
While your hair is drying naturally, think like rice and leave it alone! Resist the urge to twizzle it around your finger! By not touching it, you’re letting it do its thing and curl up nicely.
Note, coily hair vs curly hair or even wavy hair requires different techniques again – after all not two curls are the same! Visiting a good hairdresser with a curly hair specialist means you’ll never leave the salon with a fuzzy triangle again.
