Meet one of our most popular team members with both sides of the Mary Ann Weeks empire, Aaron Knechtl. Young Aaron joined us as an assistant aged just 16 years old and quickly evolved into an apprentice. He was an instant hit with the Walton team and fit in like a glove! Later he was invited to deepen his training and experience at Guildford and hit the spot with his vibrant personality there too! Hilarious and occasionally outrageous, Aaron is possibly the most enthusiastic and passionate fledgling stylist in Surrey. So without further ado, here’s his interview!
Tell us About Your Life Outside MAW?
I live in Walton-on-Thames and also work in the other Mary Ann Weeks Aveda salon there too, but when I’m out of work I do a lot of shopping. Working in Guildford makes this especially easy which I’m not sure is a good or a bad thing! I love buying new clothes and little things for my room at home. I also really enjoy meeting up with all my friends for coffee, drinks and food…
What’s your Job Title at Mary Ann Weeks Aveda?
I’m a newly qualified Stylist at Mary Ann Weeks Aveda so have realised my dream of becoming a hairdresser! I spent most of my time in the Walton-on-Thames salon whilst I was learning, but now I’m based more in the Guildford salon. They are definitely keeping me busy!
Describe in a Few Words What You Do & What’s Your Speciality?
I love blow drying, it’s my all time favourite thing! I love creating that amazing finish that shows off the shine, new hair colour or stylish cut. It’s like the cherry on the cake that definitely completes the whole look. The best part for sure is seeing the smile on my clients face as they admire themselves in the mirror. That bit is so rewarding!
How Long Have You Worked With Us?
I have work for Mary Ann weeks Aveda now three years, 2 and half years of that was amazing training from Alicia, Zoe, Sarah, Galina and Paul! I can’t say thank you enough to them for guiding me to becoming a full time Aveda hairdresser. These days I still do lots of ongoing training, but now it’s with my own clients rather than just with models. I really do enjoy what I do on the shop floor full time in Walton-on-Thames and Guildford and I hope it shines through. The time has definitely has gone very quick!
What are Your Favourite Things About Working With Aveda?
I love love love the Aveda colour and of course all the products. I can’t obsess more about how much I love them! I love the natural element behind every product – Aveda is definitely going in the right direction in the world we live in today! The Aveda colour is 97% naturally derived, which is pretty amazing. The new Aveda vibrants range, which we have in our Walton salon is also vegan. All Aveda products are cruelty free. I adore that the colour is the customisable colour range out there, so guests can enjoy the exact look they’re after and I can put my signature touch on every single client I get in.
What’s Your Best Memory of Working Here?
All the laughter we have as a salon. I could not ask for a better salon to work in! Walton-on-Thames and Guildford! I get on with every single hairstylists and beauty therapist, I can’t pick out one single moment as there are so many, but I guarantee when you come in for your hair or beauty treatments, you’ll definitely hear someone laughing somewhere!
What’s Your ‘Go To’ Aveda Product and Why?
This one’s hard! I’ve got to say, my go to Aveda product is the phomollient hair mousse. I love the fact that it helps hold the style that you want for ages and it gives the hair this weightless volume and gives a gorgeous glossy shine finish! So its fair to say I use it a lot when I’m styling! Aveda phomollient includes certified organic honey, burdock and marshmallow root what creates weightless volume and shine.
If You Could Nominate Anyone at MAW Aveda for an Award for Something, What Would the Award Be & Who Would It Be For?
Without doubt it’s Sarah Dean – the A.mazing Director in the Walton-on-Thames salon. She has helped me from the beginning of my time at Mary Ann Weeks Aveda. Before I started training Sarah was teaching me bits here and there to do with hairdressing! She taught me all what about shampooing and one of the best things my blowdrys, hats of too you Sarah you’re a star and thank you x
What Do You Use On Your Own Hair/Skin?
On my hair I used the Brilliant shampoo and conditioner… I absolutely love it, it so softening and the shine it gives is amazing! It’s a clarifying shampoo which means it’s great for getting rid of debris that builds up from using lots of products.
For my skin, I used the Aveda ‘Outer Peace Foam Cleanser’. Because my skin is quite sensitive, I find this one to be really gentle, but deep cleaning without irritating or drying it out. It has this ingredient called ‘Saw palmetto’ which reduces the oil in the skin and antioxidants from ‘amla’ and boswellia. It also has tamanu oil for soothing and repairing. I also use a toning mist to freshen up and find my skin quite likes that too!
What’s Your Top Hair Tip?
My top hair tip is using the Aveda Cherry & Almond Leave in Conditioner. You only need a small 5 pence piece sized blob for it to work it’s magic. It can be used on all hair types and has added heat protector, which is great if you’re like me and use hair products. It is made with 36 plant oil essences, smells absolutely gorgeous and makes you hair shine like a mirror! It’s another of my favourites!
How Do You Like to Relax After a Busy Day at the Salon?
I love watching films or a good TV series with my family. I’m very into having a long hot bath and putting my feet up with a glass of wine. That seems to be my fast track to relaxation and gets me ready for another mad and busy day in the salon!
