In this months ‘Meet the Team’ blog, we’re delighted to introduce a stylist that some of our long term guests might find familiar! If you don’t know Lianne Smith, she is an extremely talented hairdresser that left the Guildford Aveda salon some years ago to pursue some adventures. We couldn’t be more happy to welcome her back in the Guildford MAW Aveda team and hope you’ll enjoy reading about what she has to say about being our favourite come back kid!
Tell us About Your Life Outside MAW?
I have always loved being creative so outside of work I definitely still like to keep that creativity flowing. I am a great art lover and my happy place is pouring my ideas onto my own canvasses. There is something very therapeutic about getting engrossed in my painting and I love to see the end results and know that there isn’t another quite like it out there.
I am also a bit of a water baby, so a lot of my weekends are spent by the water, either rivers, lakes or the sea! I really love all water sports especially wake boarding which is where the rider, stands on a short board with foot binds called a wake board and is pulled behind a motorboat across its wake and off the crest to maneuver spins, twists and jumps. It’s like flying and I love it!
What’s your Job Title at Mary Ann Weeks Aveda?
I am a fully qualified Aveda Styling Director
Describe in a Few Words What You Do – and What’s Your Speciality?
I have been working as a stylist for 15 years now and I just love my job! It is so satisfying knowing you have created a whole new look for somebody that they might not have imagined for themselves but end up loving. It really is quite a cool thing when a passion and a career come together, which means I am always on the hunt for new techniques to learn and hairdressing offers an abundance of things to learn. I like to be able to get stuck in and turn my hand to anything, hence why I don’t just stick to specialising in one field of the hairdressing industry.
That said, a real soft spot of mine is ‘curly hair’ over the past few years I have put a lot of time in educating myself about the different techniques I can be using to gain some beautiful soft curls. I love working with short hair as you can be very creative. There is nothing more satisfying in this career than seeing your guests face light up when they see the finished result.
How Long Have You Worked With Us?
I actually trained as a stylist at Aveda for Mary Ann Weeks Guildford for 8 years, I have returned after 6 years where I had a fantastic adventure working in Doha, Qatar. Returning back to Mary Ann Weeks has felt like returning back to my Aveda family and it really is great to be back.
What are Your Favourite Things About Working With Aveda as a Brand?
The whole Aveda concept is so unique from start to finish. As soon as you walk through the door, that ‘Aveda smell’ of products gets you every time! The environment is very relaxing for both the guest and the stylist. But my top things has to be the colour range. Aveda have always worked so hard to make sure the quality of the ingredients in their colour is as natural as it can be and the results speak for themselves. Not only that they are completely unique as we as stylists actually create and formulate every single colour so the results are endless and the client has colour made uniquely to them.
What’s Your Best Memory of Working Here?
My best memories are working with the team here they quickly become great friends both inside and outside of work
If You Could Nominate Anyone at MAW Aveda for an Award for Something, What Would the Award Be and Who For?
Oh always the assistants Simona, Chloe and Jamie! I don’t think people know just how important these assistants are to the stylists and so often they get overlooked! The girls are always working so hard to make sure everything runs smoothly throughout the day.
What’s Your ‘Go To’ Aveda Products for Your Guests and Why?
My go to product is usually Nutriplenish Leave In Conditioner. It is great at giving the hair back the moisture and also doubles up as a heat protector. The whole Nutriplenish range is just really impressive actually, my guests keep commenting about how much they can really feel the impact it’s having on their hair
What Do You Use On Your Own Hair/Skin?
At the moment I am currently using Cherry & Almond, which I love. Not only does it smell amazing it is great at making your hair soft – so another winner by Aveda!
What’s Your Top Hair Tip?
A golden oldie but the absolute truth! Always always get your hair cut regularly, especially if your hair is fine or your goal is length. This requires regular trims every 8 weeks. I’m very happy to advise all my guests on the Aveda products I know will really work best for their hair type or the hair style they’re looking to achieve.
How Do You Like to Relax After a Busy Day at the Spa?
After a busy day in the salon I like to cook a nice meal and put my feet up in front of the TV.
